Engagement

at Kentish Town City Farm

6 March 2022

We held a one-time screen printing workshop at Kentish Town City Farm, encouraging participants to create prints inspired by animals and nature.

A print using the gyotaku technique.

The workshop offered both drop-in and pre-booked slots. This allowed the farm to attract new visitors while also providing regular attendees with a unique experience. We were particularly pleased by the multi-generational turnout, with participants ranging from children as young as six to teenagers, adults, and older community members.

The workshop format required us to provide inductions for those unfamiliar with screen printing while also supporting experienced participants in achieving their best possible prints. To accommodate varying skill levels, we offered a range of pre-prepared materials, including pre-exposed photographic screens and paper stencils of animals and nature.

Every participant left with something they had printed. Most created two prints on paper, and we also had some who printed onto recycled t-shirts. It was rewarding to see young participants embrace the entire process, from sketching an image and considering its translation into a stencil, to selecting colors and mastering the technique of pulling ink through the silk. Equally enjoyable was seeing older community members, already familiar with the process, re-engage with screen printing and offer advice to others.

This project was funded directly by Kentish Town City Farm.
