Over the past year, we have collaborated with Hackney Circle to provide older people with access to creative opportunities. This project involved organising film screenings at The Castle Cinema in Homerton for local residents.
Every Wednesday at 10am for the past five weeks, we have screened films chosen by older residents of Homerton. Many participants reside at Anchor Hackney Marshes assisted living, and we aimed to keep them connected with the wider community. The Castle Cinema has been incredibly accommodating, allowing us to propose both contemporary and classic films. Our selections included new releases like Damien Chazelle's ‘Babylon’ and Raine Allen Miller's ‘Rye Lane,’ as well as classics such as ‘The Italian Job’ and ‘The Blues Brothers.’ These screenings were offered free of charge to Anchor Housing residents and members of the Hackney Circle scheme, which provides older Hackney residents with information about local services.
To make the screenings more accessible for older people, including those experiencing dementia, we implemented several adjustments. We offered a flexible start time to accommodate potential travel delays. Attendees received complimentary tea and coffee and were welcome to bring their own refreshments. Seating was flexible, eliminating confusion over seat numbers. We also incorporated an interval for a restroom break and a mental pause. Furthermore, representatives from Castle Cinema and Engage Here were available to provide assistance.
